Net Worth Report – May 2020

Note: This is a repost from an old blog of mine, remixed with the graphs, headings ordering, and stylizations I normally do, but otherwise the text is unchanged. Hope you enjoy taking a look back at where this all began! -CJ

Hello readers! A little late on this one but I wanted to make sure I got it out the door! For those who are new, these are my monthly posts where I share all the details of my progress on my FIRE journey!

May was a pretty solid month, with a market rebound that I’m not sure how anyone could have expected. Even as the world seems to be falling apart, the market has been nothing but green. So strange. Even with a couple larger expenses this month, I ended up having a pretty sizable increase in net worth. Let’s break it down!

May 2020 – $53,768.56 (+$3,457.26)

Crazy increases here, considering what my month was like! I don’t believe I’d mentioned it in the last net worth update, but right at the end of April I quit my job that I had just started a couple weeks prior for a much better, non-contract, full time position. That transition took place in May and basically at the point of giving my two weeks I wasn’t allowed to work anymore, so I lost out on some income early May. With that in mind, the market definitely helped me out this month, plus a new account being added to the mix.

401k – $31,142.26 (+$1,281.13)

Not as massive of a jump as last month, but still surprising to see it go up such a sizable amount when it feels like the economy should be falling apart. But hey, no complaints here! I should mention, as I have in other posts, all of this money is in the S&P 500, as are all my investments (except for brokerage).

Roth IRA – $10,754.78 (+$488.72)

All market movement here too! I’ve considered contributing to my 2020 limit a number of times, and I think I will be in June, but I didn’t want to deplete my cash on hand in the case of an emergency.

Cash – $10,122.52 (+$194.98)

Super small increase here but I’m honestly surprised to see one at all! I didn’t move any money into the market this month since I’m enjoying having a bit of an emergency fund. I had $1,000 go out for grad school tuition and another $1,000 and change to help some family out, but I’ll see that money come back at some point!

HSA – $1,500.00 (+$1,500.00)

Another big boost here. I got a $500 contribution from my previous place of employment and then $1,000 from my new place of employment. I’m soon going to figure out where to go to invest the money and max it out and at my new job so expect more money in here soon!

Brokerage – $249.00 (-$7.57)

Guess SPCE didn’t do a whole lot this month! Just going to keep holding until I can make up my losses.

No debt this time around!

Hope you enjoyed this net worth report and I will hopefully get some other articles up soon, been crazy busy! Happy saving!
