Net Worth Report – June 2021 (Ramping Back Up!)

Note: This is a repost from an old blog of mine, remixed with the graphs, headings ordering, and stylizations I normally do, but otherwise the text is unchanged. Hope you enjoy taking a look back at where this all began! -CJ

Hello readers! For those who are new, these are my monthly posts where I share all the details of my progress on my FIRE journey!

June was a hard month, but I’m keeping a good attitude. Had some family stuff going on that required much of my attention. People continue to quit at my job, which resulted in being offered a retention bonus of, wait for it, $30k if I stick around for a year. We’ll see if I end up sticking it out, but that’s not a small figure. I also moved this month, to a new place with my girlfriend, which I talk a little more about below. At the end of the month I headed out on a much needed vacation. Hopefully next month is a little more normal!

Markets were solid this month! Like May there was a lull in the middle, stretched out over a week, where the market went down about 2%. The market ended up going up about 2.22% this month, which puts the S&P 500 at another record. Curious how the rest of the year plays out. We either push on to 4,800 or the thing crashes, depending on who you listen to. Whatever, let’s get into the numbers!

June 2021 – $139,168.24 (+$5,984.55)

Solid growth here. Not as major as the months earlier this year, but not nearly as much market growth and I haven’t been selling stuff as majorly as I was then. With one paycheck to go before my birthday (July 15), and still with my goal of $150K by that date, I’m feeling pretty good. A little more market growth and I’ll be there!

401k$61,510.11 (+$3,454.05)

Looking good here! I had about $2k come in from my paychecks and the rest is market movement.

Brokerage – $33,740.62 (+$3,095.87)

Not much of growth here beyond my $3k contribution. As ashamed as I am to admit it, I can explain why. I decided to throw $2k at some investments (CLOV and BB) and watched it go up to $2,800 and then back to $2,000, swapped CLOV for UMWC and ended the month at $1,600 of that money. Ouch. Also my bit of altcoins lost me another $25. So yeah, I’m still up, but definitely some poor choices here. Holding onto those stocks until I can break even, which I’m sure will happen someday.

Roth IRA – $29,699.14 (+$1,677.46)

And we’re maxed out for the year! Pretty solid market growth on top of what I put in here. Going to start contributing the $1k that was going into here to my brokerage account since I want to continue to contribute $4k a month to keep my cash savings from growing out of control.

Cash – $15,035.31 (-$2,454.09)

Another drop here! June was kind of an expensive month. I had about $4k come in from paychecks, $4k go out for Roth IRA and Brokerage at the beginning of the month, and then about $1k for donations. Beyond that, I moved to my new apartment with my girlfriend, which meant a security deposit and having to pay the first month of rent early. And, okay I’ll admit it, a bit more eating out than usual. My rent has become even cheaper now, going from $450 to $337.50 plus the split cost of internet (about $30). Not bad! July should be cheaper without having to pay rent!

HSA – $5,308.29 (+$351.94)

Once again, a couple employer contributions with some market movement. My HSA is definitely my slowest growing account, but that makes sense given the contribution limit.

Hope you enjoyed this net worth report! Happy saving!
